US election: Trump wraps up campaign in Grand Rapids

Former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump brought his campaign to a close with an early-morning rally at Michigan’s Grand Rapids.

Declaring to thousands that were present at the rally, Trump said, “if we win Michigan, we win it all.”

Trump criticised his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and denounced what he called an “evil Democrat system,” lamenting the state of vote-counting machines.

“Maybe it will take these machines we paid so much money for two weeks. We don’t want to wait 10 days or two days… We want the answer tonight,” he said.

Taking aim at prominent figures, Trump spoke against former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, vaguely hinting at a gendered slur by saying, “It starts with a ‘b’ but I won’t say it.” Some in the crowd filled in the word.

He also referred to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and his former Chief of Staff John Kelly as “our stupid generals, our terrible generals,” specifically calling Kelly “dumb as a rock.”

Trump’s speech included promises to reinvigorate the economy through increased tariffs on foreign automotive parts and expanded drilling, and he advocated for stricter immigration policies, even suggesting “the death penalty for any migrant that kills an American citizen.”

He further warned that Harris’ economic plans would result in “an economic depression.”

Michigan is a critical swing state and campaigns from the democrat and republican parties have been heavily active.
