The newly appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 14th Governing Council of the University of Jos, Professor Attahiru Jega has pledged to discharge the responsibilities of his new position to the best of his abilities.
According to a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Publication University of Jos Mr Abdullahi Abdulahi, Professor Jega stated this during a familiarization meeting between the newly appointed External members of the Governing Council and the University Management at the University’s Abuja Liaison office shortly after they were inaugurated.
Professor Jega promised to perform the task before him with utmost diligence and commitment to add greater value to what he met.
He advised the Council members to see their appointment as a call to service and enjoined them to deploy all their resources for the development of the University and stressed the need to drive the University of Jos forward in close collaboration with the University Management and reposition it towards the path of greater growth and development.
The former INEC boss assured that the Council would be transparent and adhere to the laws governing the University and called on members of the University community to also respect the University statutes as prescribed.
In a welcome address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Gray Goziem Ejikeme described the event as epoch-making eagerly awaited by members of the University community.
He noted that a University cannot function effectively without a Governing Council and described an effective Council as key to the growth of any University.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor who described Professor Jega as a veteran Union leader, an epitome of transparency and integrity and also an astute intellectual who cannot be manipulated, appealed to the other members to cooperate with the Council Chairman.
Professor Ejikeme explained that the University of Jos Governing Council does not differentiate between external and internal members or on the basis of tribe or religion.
The Registrar of the University, Chief Monday Danjem expressed excitement over the appointment of the new Governing Council members especially Professor Jega whom he said he had admired from a distance.
He said their work in the University would mostly be sacrificial and hoped that their performance would make Unijos the envy of its peers.
Other members of Governing Council in their separate remarks affirmed their commitment to work for the growth of the University. The members include Sen. Ahmed Baba Zuruq, Professor Anthony Christopher Okpe, and Chief Paingha MacDonald.
