In a significant boost to the #iSupportHer4LG initiative, the UN Information Center (UNIC) is collaborating with Women in Politics and Governance (WIPG) to support the empowerment of young women in local government leadership. This collaboration follows a meeting between WIPG’s National Convener, Hon. Jemilah Shuaibu, and UNIC’s Country Director, Mr. Ronald Kayanja, on Friday, 16/08/2024.
Mr. Kayanja expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I am extremely excited about this project as we need more women in Local Government leadership, and we will support you fully to achieve more women’s participation in local government leadership.” He commended Hon. Shuaibu’s efforts, saying, “People like you are needed in the society to push and make a difference, to champion these audacious initiatives, and we are proud to partner with you.”
Hon. Shuaibu welcomed the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to have the UN Information Center on board. This collaboration will strengthen our efforts to empower young women and increase their participation in local government leadership. We look forward to working together to create a more inclusive and equitable political landscape.”
This partnership comes on the heels of a recent endorsement from the Minister of Women Affairs, HM Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, who expressed her support for the #iSupportHer4LG initiative. The initiative is gaining momentum, with more women in different capacities from across the country reaching out to Hon. Shuaibu.
The #iSupportHer4LG initiative aims to support young women in running for local government Chairman positions, providing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. With the UNIC’s partnership, WIPG is poised to make a significant impact in promoting women’s leadership in Nigeria.
