Umahi raises alarm over Marina shoreline

The Minister of Works, Mr Dave Umahi, has raised the alarm over the erosion of Marina shoreline in Lagos.

He warned that further delay to restore the shoreline might affect many facilities on Lagos Island, calling for urgent intervention.

The degradation of the shoreline was discovered during the inspection of the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge by the minister and the Minister of Finance Mr Wale Edun, last week.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the inspection, Umahi, described the degradation of Marina shoreline as “a serious danger that God will not allow to happen.”

Expressing concern about the shoreline protection, the minister said: “Even the blue line is being threatened and a lot of facilities along the shoreline.”

Umahi said the degradation of Marina shoreline had been scoped but not discussed.

According to him, the contract for the shoreline protection has not been given out because it was not included in the 2024 budget.

“It’s just about a billion naira but the initial submission is N146 billion.

So, it’s something that needs urgent attention,” Umahi said.

The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, said there is an urgent need to salvage the shoreline

He said the protection of the shoreline and critical repair of the Third Mainland Bridge and Carter Bridge needed to be done.

In terms of the critical repairs, the bridges and the protection of the shoreline need to be done, including the fact that the Blue Line is right on the shoreline.

“If the shoreline goes, everything goes.

What we have seen as a saying is that a stitch in time saves nine,” he said.
