UI matriculates 4,649 students

…VC urges freshers to uphold excellence and integrity

The University of Ibadan (UI) has officially welcomed 4,649 newly admitted students into various academic programmes for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The matriculation ceremony, held on Wednesday at the International Conference Centre, Ibadan, brought together university officials, parents, and well-wishers to celebrate the students’ formal entry into the institution.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, disclosed that 11,912 candidates participated in the university’s post-UTME screening after meeting the minimum 200 UTME score requirement. Out of this number, 7,017 scored 50 per cent and above, with 4,411 gaining admission through UTME and 238 through the Direct Entry route.

Professor Adebowale congratulated the matriculants and urged them to uphold the university’s legacy of excellence, integrity, discipline, and resilience. He encouraged them to take advantage of the institution’s academic and moral resources to build a successful future.

Also addressing the students, an alumnus of the university and industry expert, Mr Olukayode Aiyenuyo, charged them to be intentional about their growth, stressing the importance of balancing ambition with character.

He drew a distinction between ‘being’ and ‘doing’, stating that while doing focuses on achievements and tasks, being is about identity and purpose. “Who you choose to be is far more important than what you want to do,” he said.

Aiyenuyo urged the students to embrace diversity, pursue knowledge, and align their actions with a well-defined purpose. “Success does not come without trying. Good grades do not come without frustration. Life is too special to be spent stressed. Learn to navigate challenges with grace,” he added.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the newly admitted students as they began their academic journey at Nigeria’s premier university.
