UDUS matriculates 5,859 new students

In a colorful celebration of academic heritage and promise, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), on Wednesday, officially welcomed 5,859 newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session during its grand matriculation ceremony.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Umar Aliyu, in his address, underscored the pillars of academic success—discipline, dedication, and adherence to university regulations. He encouraged the freshers to embody these values to thrive in their new academic environment.

Vice Chancellor Professor Bashir Garba commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of education, along with the contributions of the Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara State governments and religious leaders in the region.

He urged the new students to aim for excellence and uphold the core values of UDUS. “Today marks the start of a journey that can shape your destiny,” Professor Garba said. “Remain focused, stay disciplined, and strive to make your parents, guardians, and this university proud.”

Reflecting on the university’s history, Professor Garba highlighted its transformation from the University of Sokoto to UDUS in 1988, and its standing as one of Nigeria’s seven oldest universities. He encouraged the matriculants to view challenges as opportunities for growth. “Resilience and determination will carry you through,” he advised.

He also emphasized the importance of taking full advantage of the university’s rich academic resources, modern libraries, research facilities, and committed faculty. Beyond academics, he encouraged participation in extracurricular activities and community service to ensure a well-rounded university experience.

“You are now part of a legacy of excellence,” Professor Garba concluded. “The road ahead may not always be easy, but you have the tools for success and use them wisely.”

With 17 faculties and a growing reputation, UDUS continues to strengthen its position as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions of higher learning.
