The State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, in a statement on Sunday, said that the police authority has begun a full investigation into the death of the two young men which he confirmed occurred at Gariki in Ugwuoba community at about 10:30 am on Saturday.
Amarizu said, “It was gathered that duo said to be excavating sand at a site died after the sand allegedly covered them. Two persons who were said to be excavating sand at a site in Gariki in Ugwuoba community got buried in the sand they were excavating slides and allegedly covered them”
“The identity of the victims has yet to be unmasked, but sources revealed that they hailed from Nibo in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, but were at the site to excavate sand into lorries,’’ he said.
The State Police Spokesman further said that the corpses were later recovered with the assistance of the Oji River police operatives, who had contacted an excavator for assistance.

“It was gathered that the alleged incident threw people in the site to shock and mourning mood as they could not explain how it suddenly happened.The identity of the victims are yet to be unmasked but sources revealed that they hail from Nibo in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State but and had come to excavate sand into lorry tippers at the site.
“Their dead bodies were later recovered with the assistance of the Oji River Police Operatives who had contacted an Excavator that assisted to recover their dead bodies from the disaster scene.The bodies are now deposited at the hospital mortuary of General hospital Oji River for autopsy and further necessary action.
“Meanwhile, one of the workers who allegedly escaped the incident as he had gone out before then probably to ease himself, is still in deep shock on how he lost his two co-workers suddenly and how the incident would have claimed his life.He is now receiving medical attention”, Amarizu concluded.
