Three miners trapped, killed at mining site in Benue

It was a tale of woes for some miners in Benue State as the surface land collapsed on some of them leading to the death of three persons.

One other was said to have been injured during the incident which happened at Anyiin in Logo local government area of Benue State.

Locals said that miners in the area had been carrying out mining activities in the area for a long time.

According to the locals, “the incident happened when the miners were at work that the surface of the land collapsed on them.

“Three of the miners died instantly, others were seriously wounded and were taken to a hospital in Anyiin.

“The other man was not injured, he was the one who reported the collapse of the mine.”

When contacted on the phone, the council chairman, Comrade Terseer Agber said that four people were trapped in the pit.

According to the chairman, “Very early in the morning today I was called and informed that about four people were trapped in a mining pit. So I directed that they should try and do something and later on they came back and reported that they recovered three bodies and one injured.

“I have been calling on series of meetings with them to resolve the matter, but each time the meeting would fail.

“The state government is aware of their activities in the area.

“Governor Samuel Ortom had sent two Commissioners including that of Agriculture as well as Lands and Survey but nothing happened.

“The miners said that they have no dealing with the state government, that they collected their licence from Abuja and it’s the prerogative of the federal government, they don’t have any dealing with Benue State government.”

Also contacted, the State Command spokesperson, DSP, Catherine Anene said she was yet to get the report of the incident.
