THREE persons were feared killed after military men clashed with suspected touts at the Panamo section of the Ladipo International Auto Spare Parts Market in Lagos on Tuesday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, however, denied knowledge of the incident. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the shooting by the military men created panic in the market as traders and buyers scampered into different directions.
The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, but sources at the market said touts were collecting parking levy from drivers at the market when the military men came around.
A trader at the market who identified himself as Okechukwu, told Nigerian Tribune that “it is true that there was shooting at the market, but nobody can confirm if anybody died now.
“The boys [touts] were collecting money from drivers who parked at the market when the Air Force officers arrived.
“We don’t know what happened, whether the boys wanted to collect money from them or they stopped the boys from collecting money from others.
“The military men shot sporadically to scare the touts, who mobilised themselves and also attacked them [military men] with stones, bottles and other objects.”
When contacted, the police spokesperson, Adejobi, said he was not aware of the incident.
Adejobi told Nigerian Tribune that: “I am not aware of any killing at Ladipo market.”
