A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has expressed concern over what he described as a growing gap between the realities facing Nigerians and the information being relayed to President Bola Tinubu by those in his inner circle.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Garba accused aides and associates of the president of feeding him false assurances about the country and the ruling party.
“There is a lot of sycophancy around the president,” Garba said. “People are telling him that things are okay–things are not okay.”
His remarks come amid rising political tension and the recent resignation of former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, which has stirred unease within party ranks.
Garba also warned that the newly formed opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) poses a serious challenge to the APC’s political grip.
He likened the alliance to opportunistic forces waiting to exploit the party’s internal weaknesses.

“They [ADC coalition] hope for our loss, and that is why we need to be serious,” Garba cautioned. “That is the more reason why we need a leadership that listens to criticisms and accepts facts without flattery or denial.”
He further observed that the APC’s dominance in the northern region had waned, particularly after the exit of former President Muhammadu Buhari from office in 2023 and his death earlier this month.
Garba noted that Buhari’s traditional support base, which had delivered around 12 million bloc votes during past elections, had already eroded before his demise.
“In 2023, the APC managed only 5.5 million votes in the north. Where were the 12 million votes?” he queried. “Yet we won the election based on structures and strategy. But now, without Buhari, we must re-engineer those strategies to remain relevant.”
