The Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti South West local government area of Ekiti state, Oba Ajibade Alabi, has called on the federal government to withdraw all court cases instituted against the striking National Association of Residents Doctors (NARD) in the country and seek an amicable resolution to the impasse in the interest of citizens.
Tribune Online reports that government hospitals in the country had been grounded since August 2 when the doctors commenced the strike to press home their demands and improvement in the health sector.
The immediate past chairman of the state council of traditional rulers noted that the strike is having negative impacts on citizens who could not afford to visit private hospitals for treatment, saying there is a need for both parties to meet and resolve all the differences.
According to a statement by the media adviser to Alawe, Chief Ajibade Olubunmi, the traditional ruler stated this while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in his palace to mobilise subjects to take covid-19 vaccines in the state.
He revealed that it is expedient for the federal government and the aggrieved doctors to urgently have a meeting point considering the battle against the ravaging covid-19 pandemic and the deadly cholera disease.
Oba Alabi said, “I want the federal government to end the court actions taken on the matter and resolve the crisis through a round table discussion in the overall interest of the common people of Nigeria.
“The industrial action embarked upon by the doctors has been having adverse effects on members of the public and those in government and that an early resolution to the matter would be in the best interest of the nation.”
He expressed regret over the incessant industrial actions by unions in the health sector due to the poor investment in the sector by the government, adding, “the federal government should always allocate a huge amount of money in the budget to revamp the sector with particular reference to the provision of modern facilities in the hospitals and payment of health workers their entitlements as and when due.”
On the solutions to the challenges confronting the nation’s health sector, Alawe stated that “federal and the state governments should provide modern facilities in Nigerian hospitals and take a holistic overhaul of the health sector to make a modern and affordable health services available to the people.
“In addition, adequate monetary packages should be put in place for medical personnel to forestall their migration to other countries.”
