THE case of Mmesoma Ejikeme is an exposure to the family system, peer influence and the importance of parental control on children.
Mmesoma did not only catch the attention of many Nigerians with her strong confidence and effrontery at the early stage of her allegations against the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in a viral video she made, but she also had this cool and innocent look that endeared her to people’s hearts. Little did Nigerians know that Mmesoma had forged her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result and would still come out in public to confess her misdeed.
Social media, especially Facebook and Twitter, were filled with diverse opinions on whether Mmesoma truly forged the result or it was a technical error from JAMB. Some Nigerians even went as far as bringing tribalism into the issue, stating that Mmesoma was denied her real score because she is from the south-eastern part of the country.
Despite all the controversies, JAMB has done creditably well, as the institution has improved significantly in the areas of technical and cyber security management (CSM) in recent years.
Who says the punishment levelled against Mmesoma is not fair? An adage says, spare the rod and spoil the child.
The quality of training in terms of moral upbringing and social etiquette that we give to our children will determine how peaceful and restful our society will be.
The entire society, not just the parents, will bear the brunt of every child that is not given a proper upbringing. In order to avoid a gory future as a nation, we must be determined to bring our children up in a manner that will make them good pillars of the family and society.
