Two members of the 2024 Batch A, Stream 2 of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Sokoto State have been honoured with the prestigious Sultanate and State Government Meritorious Award.
The award, presented to the best-behaved male and female corps members in the state, included a Plasma TV and a cash prize of ₦100,000 each, courtesy of the Sultanate Council.
Speaking at the award ceremony in Sokoto on Thursday, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Usman Yakubu Yaro, stated that the initiative aims to encourage corps members to serve diligently, especially in rural communities.
Commending the awardees for their dedication and exemplary conduct during their service year, the Sultanate emphasised that the recognition serves as motivation for other corps members to remain committed to national service.
Yaro further explained that Sultan’s award for the “Best Behaved Male and Female Corps Members” was designed to discourage corps members from concentrating only in urban areas, as their contributions are more needed in rural communities.
Expressing optimism, he noted that corps members from Sokoto State could potentially qualify for Presidential Awards in the future.
The Coordinator also announced that the NYSC has partnered with various agencies to provide business and entrepreneurial training, equipping corps members with essential skills for self-reliance during and after their service year.
He urged the outgoing corps members to leverage these skills to build sustainable livelihoods, warning that those who violated NYSC regulations would face disciplinary action, as the scheme operates on a system of rewards and penalties.
In his closing remarks, Yaro advised corps members to uphold the values of the NYSC, remain security-conscious, and avoid travelling at night.
