In a renewed effort to combat rising moral decadence and social vices across Sokoto State, the state government has announced plans to establish Hisbah offices in all 23 local government areas.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the disclosure on Friday during the commissioning ceremony of the newly reconstructed Buhari Dan Shehu Jumu’at Mosque in Sokoto.
According to the governor, the move is aimed at promoting modesty and instilling greater moral discipline within communities. He emphasised that the Hisbah corps, which was recently revived by his administration, has already made significant strides in reducing immoral acts within the state.
“We established the Hisbah Board with the mission of promoting modesty and fostering a cleaner, safer, and more disciplined society,” Governor Aliyu stated.
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing religious institutions and upholding Islamic values, citing the remodelling of 65 central Jumu’at mosques and over 40 daily prayer mosques across the 23 LGAs as part of ongoing efforts.
Additionally, the governor revealed that his administration has introduced a monthly upkeep allowance for 90 Jumu’at mosques within the Sokoto metropolis, ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Jabir Sani Mai Hula, urged mosque committees to ensure proper use of the funds, particularly for cleanliness and maintenance, noting that such support has also enhanced Islamic propagation in the state.
Dignitaries at the event included the representative of the Sultan of Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu; Chairman of Sokoto South Local Government, Ya’u Muhammad Danda; and renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Mabera.
The ceremony concluded with the official commissioning of the mosque by Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, who also led the Friday Jumu’at prayer.
