The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has cautioned against military involvement in the governance of the country.
He stressed that regardless of the stakes, the military should never be considered an option for governing the country.
According to him, the military is neither beneficial for itself nor for society, as everything deteriorates under its rule, including the nation’s very soul.
He added, “The fact that elections are not free and fair is not an excuse to return to 400 years of captivity in Egypt. The military should never return.
The press should be the last estate to succumb to amnesia if others forget. We may be dissatisfied with the current government and face problems in every sector where we should be thriving, but one thing we still have is the blank check of democratic processes, which we can cash whenever we approach the Bank of Democracy with honest credentials.”

He acknowledged that the economy under the Tinubu administration is struggling; however, he asserted that it is no justification for a military takeover.
He stated, “Any change in government should come through the ballot and not through the coercion of civil society. A new civilian government should be the only means of replacing the present government, no matter our level of dissatisfaction.
I am not prepared to endure another term under the current government, which is why I am working hard to oust the APC democratically. Regardless of the stakes, a military return to power is out of the question. It benefits neither the military nor society.
“Everything dies under military rule, including the soul of the nation. The fact that elections are flawed is no excuse to return to 400 years of captivity in Egypt.
That is the new frontier for our democratic struggle, the Red Sea we must cross. Even when we reach the Promised Land, we will still have the Philistines to fight. Only cowardice and amnesia could embrace the lullabies of a junta. God forbid! Nigeria is destined for democracy, and so it shall be.”
