Ruger, Bnxn make grand statement with RnB EP

Last week, Ruger and Bnxn, two flagship artistes of the Gen Z released a joint EP. A feat their predecessors ran away from. After years of online beef, firing shots in song, the two superstars gave their fans a surprise EP which is aptly tagged “RnB.”

Ruger has always drifted more to Dancehall genre, Bnxn remains a R&B lord in the Nigerian music industry, both artistes also write so well. Delving more into their emotion to craft songs that continues to dominate the airwave.

With just three months into the year 2024, Ruger and Bnxn already gave the industry a major highlight, perhaps, the young musicians are doing what their elders haven’t done. Collaboration. The synergy on this EP is made from heaven, they bounced on each other’s energy, thereby giving the fans a solid seven track project.

“Romeo Must Die,” the lead single to the project, is hinged on a mid tempo production that flits between R&B and Dancehall. One time, the lyrics are self praising, the next minute it takes the gratitude route. The song is a typical Ruger cheat code. The needless attempt to overtalk or form a gangster, still, Bnxn reluctantly flows along.

“POE,” finds Bnxn on a familiar turf. Even when they sing about coitus, they lay less emphasis on it. They still give the R&B element. On this song, Bnxn sings about being in love with two women, Ruger sings from a coitus perspective.

The comical Ilashe paints a poignant picture of what happened in getaways. The lavi da local type of fun, parties and more. The Amapiano themed “Party Monster,” find Ruger struggling with his vocals, not even the crowd vocals could salvage the track. The mixing makes the ears ache.

Coitus, Love and Party are the dominant topics on the R&B EP. From “Bae Bae,” which opens the EP, the rollercoaster continues until the last track “Not Done.” Someone was definitely sex starved.

On R&B, Bnxn brings in Blaisebeatz and Sarz as producer while Ruger brings in Kukbeatz to handle the production. It’s a melting point of some of the finest music producers around. At the end, a sumptuous meal was presented to the fans.

With just a few preceding the release of the EP, it is still difficult to adequately judge what this release portent for the music industry, however, for once, we have two former arch rivals coming together to release an EP.

Perhaps, other artistes would learn about the power of collaborations, the gain of synergizing and more essentially the loss associated with needless beef and avoidable squabble in the music industry.
