Remember Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man and one of the continent’s best known philanthropists?
Well, Dangote’s countryman, Roland Uhunoma Egbon, is nowhere near him in terms of riches.
Nevertheless, Roland Egbon believes that you don’t have to be a billionaire to help the needy. He believes also, that no one should be left behind in society’s quest for progress.
That’s why Roland Egbon, the Managing Director of United Kingdom based firm, R Squares Accessories Ltd, is set to incorporate a foundation that will see to the needs of the less privileged across Africa.
The thirty-five-year old UK-based serial entrepreneur belives that lending a helping hand and mentoring the less privileged will help set them on the right path that will give them a chance to turn out as patriotic and productive citizens in future.
“The hopeless in our society need a helping hand, a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear. I want to focus on helping in that area,” Roland Egbon said.
Born in 1986 in Nigeria’s southern state of Edo, Egbon trained as a Political Scientist at the Ambrose Ali University, Benin City, before venturing into entrepreneurship.
“I am going to change the narrative for the less privileged through advocacy and philanthropy. Let’s make the world a better place through this course. I welcome any one who is as passionate about this as I am to join me in any way that they can,” Roland Egbon said.
Growing up in the Nigeria of the 90s and 2000s meant getting used to tough times. The economy was weak and had just started opening up following the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
Roland Egbon recalls that, being the youngest child, he hardly got what he wanted. But that didn’t push him to seek illegal ways of satisfying his needs or wants. He recalled that he used his older brother and sisters’ lives as a mirror to avoid the mistakes they made.
“I grew up not getting what I wanted as we didn’t have enough but through prayer, hard work and dedication I am where I am today by God’s grace,” he said.
This personal experience helped him to empathise with you people and to understand that with just a little push, a little help, they can actualise their dreams and become better and more useful citizens.
This, among others, fuels his desire to impact and better the lives of others.
Thus, he pledged to redefine the focus of many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing employment for those needing jobs or scholarships for the less privileged who need an education.
“I am a firm believer in the importance of building an inclusive society where no one is left behind even as society progresses,” Roland Egbon added.
The young businessman is certainly someone to watch for the future.
