A press statement issued by Simeon Nwakudu, Wike’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media has it that the attack was carried out by some men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad SARS and soldiers in the motorcade of the Minister of Transportation.
According to the statement “Governor on Saturday escaped assassination as Special Anti-robbery Squad Operatives and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in the motorcade of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi attacked his convoy”.
The statement said the attack took place at Nwanja Junction on Trans-Amadi Road while governor Wike was on project inspection.
“The SARS Personnel and Soldiers in the Minister’s convoy hit down the Governor’s Escort Rider and attacked the policemen in the pilot car”.
“Mr Debewari , Aide -De- Camp, to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, supervised the attack, which included damage of cameras held by journalists”, the statement alleged.
It added “part of the attack, was the Commander of Rivers SARS, Mr Akin Fakorede who received the Minister of Transportation at the Port Harcourt International Airport and accompanied on his trip”.
After the attack, the Rivers State Governor continued with his inspection of Projects adding that he was not harmed, despite the attack.
The Minister of Transportation had over 50 SARS Personnel , Soldiers and Mobile Policemen in his motorcade.
Efforts to get the reaction of the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi failed as calls made to David Iyofo, head of his media team could not go through as his phone was switched off.
But a source in the office confided in our correspondent that they were already aware of the the allegation and would soon come out with a response.
