Reps task NIS to operationalise Oyo passport office

The House of Representatives on Wednesday tasked the authorities of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on the need to operationalize the Oyo State Passport Office located in Oyo township, without further delay.
The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Adeyemi Adeniyi.
In his lead debate, Hon. Adeniyi explained that NIS successfully completed its office located in Oyo township and ready for commissioning since October 2018.
“The Nigerian Immigration Service is the federal agency in charge of immigration processes and cross-border human movement into and out of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with offices in many parts of Nigeria as may be necessitated for operational exigencies.
“The House also notes that around October 2018, the Service completed its office in Oyo township ready for official commissioning.
“The House is concerned that while the physical structure is ready, working equipment to make the office functional for full operation is yet to be installed.
“The House is also concerned that despite much entreaties and royal representation to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, nothing has been do e to Commission the office,” he noted.
To this end, the House mandated its Committee on interior to engage with the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service with a view to facilitating the equipping of the Oyo Passport Office for its commissioning and operations.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the plenary, the lawmaker representing Afijio/Oyo East/Oyo West/ Atiba Federal Constituency noted that concerted efforts were being made by stakeholders including the paramount ruler of Oyo Kingdom, His Majesty Oba Lamidi Adeyemi to impress it upon the NIS to make the Passport office became operational.
Hon. Adeyemi expressed optimism that with the current intervention of the House, the Passport office will become operational in no distant future, which he said, will bring additional source of revenue to the Federal Government because of its strategic location in Oyo as a border town community.
