With the speed of light, members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday passed through Third Reading a bill seeking to enable a person appointed into the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment.
The Executive legislation seeks to amend the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.
Clause 2 of the bill further seeks the amendment of Section 18 of the Nigeria Police’s Principal Act by adding a new sub-section (8A).
It provides that: “Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-section (8) of this section, any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of Section 7(6) of this Act.”
Leading debate on the general principles of the Executive bill, Majority Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonbvere, noted that the proposed Clause seeks to “prevent the constant rollover of tenure of the AIG of Police does not in any way affect other clauses in the Constitution that could be invoked when there are violations.
“So, it is essentially to say the tenure lasts as in the letter of appointment. I think my colleagues should support this.
“It will support security, continuity, assurability, dependability, and productivity of the IG.”
