Religious extremism: Enough is enough

IT is today very sad to find many religious circles impose heavy financial obligations from members of their congregations. This is very sad and disappointing. It is quite unfortunate that we have governments at all levels that are very irresponsible and insensitive to the plight of the masses. Sadly this is taken farther by the garb that these religious leaders adorn as they canvass for funds in God’s name from their members.

From many parts of the country, we find various shades of religious extremism threatening the fabric of our existence. These extremists go about with strange ideologies that have no positive on the welfare of the generality of their followers. Education which should be enlightening has not played the proper role of fostering unity among the various sections of our country.

We must continue to enlighten our people against the rampaging influence of religious extremism and the need to curb and dissociate ourselves from it. All over the world, the devastating impacts of religious extremism can only be imagined and not felt. Many homes have been destroyed; villages and whole communities sacked.

Again, nations caught in the web of this menace have not recovered from the sad repercussions of religious extremism. African countries and their European counterparts have been hard hit. Many have called for the enthronement of global peace but this appears to be a tall order. Yet, we need a nation that is devoid of religious extremism and a globe that popularises peace.
