US President, Donald Trump on Monday described Russian President, Vladimir Putin as “a nice gentleman” while discussing their recent diplomatic phone call during a White House dinner with Kennedy Center board members.
“A nice gentleman named Vladimir Putin,” Trump said, recounting the exchange.
He told guests that the conversation was productive and expressed optimism about efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“We had a good talk, and I think that progress is being made,” he said.
Trump also pointed to the staggering human toll of the conflict.
“5,000 young soldiers are being killed every single week on average. Can you believe 5,000 and it’s actually a number probably worse than that, in addition to other people that are being killed in towns, and we’re trying to stop it, it’s a bloodbath. It’s an absolute bloodbath,” he said.
Earlier in the day, he told reporters in the Oval Office that he was confident a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine could be reached soon.
