In what appeared to be a seminal effort to address the pressing oral health challenges plaguing Nigerian slum communities, Dr Samuel Tundealao, a distinguished public health dentist at the Department of Periodontology and Community Dentistry, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, spearheaded groundbreaking research under the auspices of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in the United Kingdom.
This collaborative initiative sheds light on the multifaceted dynamics influencing oral diseases and healthcare accessibility within marginalised populations.
Reflecting on the pivotal role of this research, Dr Tundealao remarked, “The prevalence of dental ailments in slum communities is often accompanied by excruciating pain. While cultural beliefs influence perceptions of dental pain and treatment modalities, systemic barriers such as affordability, service availability, and delayed care exacerbate anxieties and hinder timely access to formal dental care. Moreover, reliance on potentially harmful self-care remedies further impedes proactive engagement with healthcare services.”
He continued, “To mitigate these challenges, targeted oral health promotion and preventive education initiatives are imperative. By fostering awareness and encouraging timely utilisation of dental services, we can dismantle barriers to care and safeguard the oral health and well-being of vulnerable populations in Nigerian slums.”
Under the leadership of Dr. Tundealao, the research team conducted an in-depth analysis in the Idikan community, Oyo State, Nigeria, as part of the “Household Adult Oral Health Survey,” a pivotal component of NIHR’s multi-country project in slum settings.
The insights gleaned from this endeavour serve as a cornerstone for policymakers and researchers, providing them with vital baseline data crucial for designing tailored interventions to address the complex oral health needs of slum dwellers.
The research findings underscore the urgent need for holistic approaches to address oral health disparities, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts between policymakers, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders.
Through concerted action and strategic interventions, we can advance towards a future where equitable access to oral healthcare is a reality for all, irrespective of socio-economic status or geographic location.
