The Council of Former Presidential Candidates of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFPCFRN) has condemned the violence, arson, and destruction of public properties resulting from the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in some parts of Nigeria.
The council, however, commended the majority of Nigerian youths for their peaceful conduct during the protest.
National Chairman Dr. Tunde Anifowose-Kelani and Executive Secretary Alhaji Gani Galadima gave this commendation on Monday.
The group noted that it would have been better if the protest had not been allowed to escalate into violence.
CFPCFRN appealed for calm, emphasizing that now that President Bola Tinubu has addressed the nation, protesters across Nigeria should halt the protest.
According to Anifowose-Kelani, this call became necessary in light of the pockets of violence already recorded in some parts of the country.
He stated that the President has heard the yearnings of Nigerians loud and clear and has expressed his readiness to address them.
The group said, “As a result of cases of looting, destruction, and loss of lives in some parts of the country, we are appealing to protesters across Nigeria to put an end to the protests in order to prevent hoodlums and political thugs from hijacking the process.
“In the last few days, genuine protesters have conducted themselves in a peaceful manner. Our fear is that these patriotic Nigerians should not allow criminal elements to cause disruptions to the relative peace in the country.”
CFPCFRN urged politicians not to encourage or promote violence in the country through the ongoing protest.
The group called on the Nigerian government to urgently and pragmatically address the protesters’ demands.
