The World Institute for Peace on Friday raised the alarm over the ripple effect of fraudulent activities by many public officeholders that could keep Nigeria’s economic stability staggering for the next decade.
The Executive Director Of the Institute, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi who raised the alarm while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, noted that the spate of financial recklessness and mismanagement of funds in the offices has rendered their operations useless and ineffective and called on the new Federal government administration led by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to extend its tentacles to other offices and agencies apart from the Central Bank Of Nigeria governor, Emefiele currently being quizzed for alleged financial recklessness.
The Executive Director remarked that probing the Director of Finance of the CBN, Dayo Arowosegbe over the alleged leaked audio conversation between the Governor and the Director of Finance is very important as well as the fund used to print the new Naira notes, argued that many others involved as the investigation will be unfolding.
He however listed other places where the eagle eyes of the president should go for probing as: the office of the immediate past Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development saying, the minister must answer to how she defrayed billions of naira that entered the ministry during her tenure.
He added that the office of the Executive Secretary, National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) should be able to give an account of billions of naira that entered the agency and why he refused to pay the salaries of the members of the board for almost 37 months. Paul Ikonne needs to be questioned for accounts.
“We call on the current administration under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to begin a crackdown on some cankerworms, eating away the root of the nation’s economic and financial strength.”
“We noted that “every day, Nigeria seems to secure its place as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. From online scams to political misdemeanours. It seems the issue of corruption in Nigeria is not going away soon” However, all hands should be on deck in order to put a hurt to this.”
“We implored the new Federal Government administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to begin a crackdown to probe through the EFCC and ICPC, the following past office holders.”
In furtherance, our organization called on the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke to reinstate the kings in the state, which he quenched their power, leaving them powerless and palace-less as he barricades their palaces with police force.
“We observed that after Gov. Adeleke attained the mantle of power in the state, he went on a spree in exiting the kings that the immediate past Governor of the state, Alh. Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola installed from their palaces.”
“We cited the cases of traditional monarchs which are still in courts regarding their right to the thrones and the inter-family kingship tussle before Gov. Adeleke interfered with the step aside the order.”
” This action of the Governor can only be described as a misplacement of duty. While instead of appealing to the aggrieved parties in the affected communities to allow court processes and beef up security apparatus in the areas and give warning to anyone who may want to foment trouble, the governor displayed the executive power in a manner that his action can only be described as sentiment.”
“It is quite unfortunate that even where there is no rancour about the installation of the king, the governor asked the already installed king not to enter the palace, this is indeed a misplacement of priority.”
“We learnt that part of the claims by Gov. Jackson Adeleke is that, the former governor installed the kings after July 16th election. But it is very necessary for the governor to learn more about how many months and how many years make a tenure for a governor and when exactly is a governor who lost reelection for a second term in office expected to drop his or her executive power within the confine of Nigeria constitution”.
” We believe Gov. Adeleke is not aware that his own first term tenure as the incumbent governor of Osun state will come to an end on the 27th of November 2026. He should simply know that those kings were installed within the context of the constitutional right of the former governor. He should stop playing politics with Yoruba tradition.”
“Legally”, “it is not within the ambience of the executive arm of government, to unseat a king from the throne. By design, it’s the function of the judiciary to resolve such issue.” in the context of the Obaship Tussle in Osun, the governor needs to allow the judiciary to complete its steps which Supreme Court is the last stage of the process and that is when he, as a governor can exercise his executive power because the cases are already going on in various courts before he came to power.
“For a reasonably diplomatic governor, there should have been an allowance of the court, the judiciary has to take its course”, he stressed.
