The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has cautioned social media influencers and bloggers against spreading false information that could destabilise the party.
Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day capacity-building workshop on media awareness and political peace for social media handlers in Birnin Kebbi, on Wednesday, Damagum emphasised that the PDP is stronger than any individual and cannot be destroyed by internal conflicts or mischief.
Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Hon. Yusuf Dingyadi, Damagum urged participants to prioritize promoting the party’s manifestos and vision. He stressed the need for discipline and unity within the party, condemning those who exploit internal disagreements to breed hatred and division.
Damagum expressed his commitment to fostering forgiveness, cohesion, and unity within the party, stating that leadership under his watch would not tolerate injustice or propaganda.
“Our party organs, especially the National Working Committee (NWC) under my command, are focused on finding solutions for our survival rather than fueling discord,” he said.
He called on party leaders and members to avoid being instruments of character assassination or engaging in activities that tarnish the party’s image.
“Overheating internal crises and promoting individual interests over party unity is detrimental to the values and vision of our founding fathers,” he warned.
The workshop, organised by the PDP Supporters Group in collaboration with Northern Professionals in Politics and Development (NOPDE), was aimed at strengthening the capacity of social media handlers to promote party cohesion and unity.
Dr Suleiman Aliyu-Gafai, Head of Media Mobilisation for the PDP Supporters Group, highlighted the importance of digital media in advancing the party’s objectives.
He criticized recent statements by certain individuals, including BOT Chairman Sen. Adolphus Wabara, as divisive and unhelpful.
Gafai urged northern leaders to rally behind the party and work towards its success, particularly in the wake of the 2023 elections, where PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar garnered significant support from the region.
He called for unity, forgiveness, and discipline to build a formidable platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The event, attended by over 50 participants from Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, featured presentations and discussions on leadership, digitalization, and the political history of northern Nigeria.
Damagum also assured party members of his unwavering commitment to the principles of unity, discipline, and progress. He reiterated that the PDP remains a resilient force and urged all members to prioritize collective goals over personal interests to uphold the vision of the party’s founding fathers.
