Techpreneur and Oshegz Telecoms founder, Segun Olatunde, has recently explained how technology is a gift from God and how technological innovations are redefining human societies and civilisation. He made this known while delivering a lecture titled ‘The importance of technology in the twenty-first century’, which as one of the maiden annual lectures of the National Association for Students of Religious Studies (NASSORS) of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
Olatunde, who graduated from religious studies department of OAU in 2017, stated that it was a big honour to be called by NASSORS to deliver the lecture, and that he regarded his presence in the university as homecoming.
He began his lecture by stating that after the gift of life, technology is perhaps the greatest gift, adding that technology is the mother of civilisation, arts and science. He further stated that technology is the main reason the world is a global community, and also the reason life and living have changed for the better.
“Technology has been with mankind since over 3.3 million years ago,” he said. “Our ancestors made use of basic technological applications and approaches to solve certain problems, such as using sharp stones as knife, the discovering of fire through stones, sailing, irrigation, and many more.”
In the contemporary world, he noted that technology has become both a force for good and for bad. “Recent technologies have improved communication, learning, healthcare, economies in a global scale.” On the other hand, he lamented, “It has also led to the development of destructive weapons, unwanted byproducts, and privacy encroachment.”
In the course of the lecture, he explained in details the various types of technology, which included communication, information, construction, medical, financial, agriculture, assistive, artificial intelligence, education, blockchain, among others.
He stated that the creation of information for communication; to store and organise data; for the easy and opportunity to learn anything, anytime and anywhere; in improvement in healthcare and global health; in improvement of private life and society, are some of the important benefits of technology to man and the society.
On the challenges of technology, he noted that innovations like artificial intelligence could reduce job opportunities, and that people across industries like automobile, finance, and manufacturing are worried about their future technology. He maintained that artificial intelligence has high probability to save or destroy the world. He also noted that the internet has become a great tool for learning, yet technological involvement does not always guarantee quality of education.
Other challenges of technology he mentioned included increased plagiarism and cheating, decline in analysis and creative thinking, privacy and security threats, internet addiction, sleep disorder, physical inactivity, among others.
Olatunde concluded his lecture by stressing that technological revolution has numerous economic and social impacts, and requires serious social science investigation in order to manage its risks and dangers, and that such work would be valuable for both social policy and technological designs.
At the end of the lecture, Olatunde was awarded with a meritorious award by NASSORS as a worthy alumni of the department. Receiving the award, Olatunde stated that he was grateful for the honour and recognition, adding that he was ready to do more for NASSORS and for the department.
