Operation Whirl Stroke troops neutralise three bandits in Benue

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke within the last one week neutralised three bandits in Katsina-Ala and Ukum local government areas of Benue State.

According to the press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of OPWS, Flight Officer, Audu Katty and made available to journalists in Makurdi on Sunday, troops killed one bandit in Katsina-Ala and the other two in the Ukum council area.

Katty said that the troops had on Thursday and Friday respectively responded to a distress call at Tse Mela in Yooyo council ward and Tse Jondo of Katsina-Ala and Ukum local government areas of Benue State where the bandits were found and neutralized.

According to the PRO, one Iortyom Wuave aka Junta had engaged the troops in a gun duel at the Katsina-Ala council area but was later neutralized.

He further stated that two other bandits; Terdoo Kiorga aka, Apaapa and Orkulam Mom aka Orbutee were neutralized in another operation at Ukum on Friday.

“Notably, on 24 February 2022 at about 1500hrs while on fighting patrol, troops responded to a distress call at Tse Mela in Yooyo Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) on the sighting of Iortyom Wuave aka JANTA, a notorious armed militia gang leader on OPWS wanted list. Troops swiftly mobilized and moved to the location.

“On sighting troops, he fired in the direction of the troops as he tried to escape into the nearby bush. He was neutralized during the engagement.

“Relatedly, troops sustained their clearance operations in the early hours of Friday 25 February 2022 when they raided the hideout of notorious armed bandits at Tse Jundo, Mbamena Council Ward in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

“During the operation, two armed bandits were neutralized by troops in a shootout. They are: Terdoo Kiorga aka APAAPA and Orkulam Mom aka ORBUTEE. The duo and others who were the most dangerous foot soldiers of late Terwase Akwaza (a.k.a GANA) have been on the wanted list of OPWS.

“They were known to have unleashed mayhem on Zaki Biam and environs in the past.

The OPWS spokesman said that items recovered in the hideout included 5 AK 47 rifles, 1 Pump Action rifle, 3 AK 47 magazines, quantity 127 x 5.56mm rounds, 12 cartridges, 5 cell phones and assorted charms.

Katty said that troops have continued to conduct operations, both kinetic and non-kinetic in order to ensure relative peace across the operation areas.
