Agboola, who also served as deputy governor to the late Akeredolu, left the APC for the opposition PDP, citing irreconcilable differences with Akeredolu. After losing the PDP primary to Jegede in 2020, he joined the ZLP to challenge Akeredolu in the 2020 gubernatorial election.
