I want to start this letter by telling the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmed El- Rufai that the recent increase in tuition fees of all the students of Kaduna State University is bothersome.
As a non-indigene in a state university in Nigeria at one time, I understand the plight of the students because I almost dropped out due to similar increase in the tuition fees until Allah used someone to help me to pay for my law school tuition fees and my tuition fees at the university. The truth is that some of our state governors have relied heavily on revenue generated from the state universities for their development leading to increase in tuition fees without taking into consideration how the children of the underprivileged would pay.
We all know that education is the bedrock of any development in any nation and from all indications, some students whose parents cannot afford to pay the new tuition fees will certainly drop out from the Kaduna State University.
If we look at the face of the Kaduna State University indigent students, we will discover that many are in pains. This is not strange considering the situation of things currently in Nigeria; things have been very tough for the average Nigerian and everyone is striving for survival in an environment riddled by insecurity.
I am sure a lot of parents of indigent students schooling at Kaduna State University would have experienced high blood pressure now. In view of this, I want to appeal to Governor El-Rufai to have mercy on the indigent students by protecting their future through reversing the increase or reducing it.
The negative aspect of this ugly incident is that some of the parents of these students are jobless. While it is true that the state government needs more money to provide social and basic amenities for its citizens, I want to plead with the governor to look elsewhere to source for funds to run his government.
It is a fact that taxation is a major source of resource mobilisation for development.
