REGISTRY in the university system has been likened to the biological operation of the human heart which when functioning effectively pumps blood to all the cells in the body to keep it healthy and alive.

The former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, gave the analogy while delivering the 2nd Annual Registry Lecture of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.

Speaking on the topic, ‘The Registry as the Heart of the University System: Making it Beat Efficiently’, Okebukola, who was represented by the former vice chancellor of Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, Professor Sampson Denola Ayanlaja, said that the university would literarily grind to a halt if its registry breaks down, thereby causing an equivalent of a heart attack to the university system.

While noting that the registry services all units in the university, he called on the managers of the university education to take the appropriate steps to keep the registry working at optimal capacity.

He added that the registry, being the secretariat of the university and the rallying point of all administrative activities, plays important roles in the achievement of institutional goals and objectives.

According to him, the emerging trend occasioned by the increasing use of technology in service delivery has warranted the registry to move away from analog service delivery such as postage and manual delivery to technology-mediated services such as use of electronic files for meetings rather than hard copies of files to conduct “paperless meetings”; use of emails, text messages and WhatsApp for communication; use of voice-to-text device for recording and transcribing the transactions of meetings; rapid electronic issuance of students’ results and  transcripts and monthly release of electronic newsletters.

In his remarks, the acting vice chancellor of the university, Professor Theophilus Fadayomi, admitted that the business of the university would suffer without a vibrant registry.

He said the Registry of Elizade University has played a vital role in the achievements so far recorded by the university.

Speaking earlier, the registrar of the University, Mr. Omololu Adegbenro, described Annual Registry lectures as avenue for Registry staff to learn from seasoned administrators.

He urged participants at the programme to take advantage of the lecture to develop themselves.

The lecture, which was chaired by the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Justice Ademola Ajakaye, had in attendance Registry staff from Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Osun State University, Osogbo; and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungb-Akoko.

Others were from the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo; Covenant University, Ota; Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji; Kings University, Ode-Omu; Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.
