Obi of Onitsha urges NCWS to address issues of inequality, harmful practices

THE Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, on Saturday advised the leadership of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) to address the problems of inequality and other harmful practices against Nigerian women.

Achebe gave the advise when a delegation of the NCWS led by its National President, Mrs Laraba Shoda, visited the Obi in his palace in Onitsha.

He said that there was a big gap between the men and the women in some communities that needed to be addressed by those in authority.

Achebe recalled the recent Supreme Court ruling which announced that both men and women had the same right in inheritance.

He also urged the council to address other harmful practices against the Nigerian woman.

Achebe urged the NCWS to work together with the traditional rulers to address some of the problems facing women.
He said that women were vehicles of peace in many nations today and that the NCWS should emulate same.

“Don’t underestimate your role in crises management, particularly in this trying period that the country is going through.

“In African society, the women as mothers are the peacemakers in the home and in the society at large.

“The NCWS should be engaged in creating and promoting peace, which should be everybody’s business; therefore, all hands must be on desk to return peace to Nigeria.

“We should not leave the issue of peace only for the military and people in the National Assembly,’’ he said.

Earlier, Shoda said her visit to the palace was to associate with the obi as a daughter of Onitsha.

She said that the society would join hands with the women in the National Assembly to ensure the quick passage of the inequality bill.

Shoda added that the NCWS would try to encourage women that will become credible leaders in the country in near future.

The NCWS president also presented gift items to the obi on behalf of the Nigerian women.
