Ogunbodede, gave the suggestions during 2018 In-House review exercise of the Institute of Agriculture and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, with the theme: “Agricultural Research and Sustainanble Food and raw materials production: The challenges of climate change.
Ogunbodede, noted that the climate change phenomenon and its attendant problems cannot be stopped by fiat. “In the meantime, mankinmd is left with option of devising coping strategies that can assist to mitigate against it and enhance survival of mankind on the planet earth.
“The onus now rest on our various research institutes to fashion out relevant research activities that can be of tremendous help for farmers and other stakeholders in the business of food and raw materials production, distribution, preservation, product development and food security”.
He therefore, recommended that research institutes must focus on research that focuses on crop and animal production with flood, heat, drought and disease/pest resistance. Research should be farmer demand-driven, market-oriented, problem-solving, industrially demanded and generally acceptable for high adoption.
Ogunbodede, also posited that cutting-edge reseaches which promote quality, nutrition, eco-friendly, integrated in nature, allows waste recycling to avoid environmental pollution should be embarked upon.
“Research that does not require too much of energy from hydrocarbon, not emitting too much of CO2 and not generating too much of heat, research that can be powered by rewable energy such as solar and windmill. Outcome of our research effort should be sustainable, culturally acceptable, socio-economically viable and generally affordable particularly to the common man”.
