Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) branch on Monday embarked on strike action over non-disbursement of its members’ Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) by the school authority.
The Chairman of the branch, Dr Adeola Egbedokun who gave the order in a statement after the union congress in the university, informed members of the series of engagements the executives have had with some senior members of the University management.
He said, “congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the University to effect payment of EAA to deserving members.
“Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglio has failed. Consequently, congress resolved that:
“Total, Comprehensive and Indefinite Strike should commence immediately ii. The strike must not be called off without a congress resolution to the effect.
“Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable. iv. The Strike Coordinating Committee be set up to monitor the strike.
“Based on the above and on the strength of the permission granted by ASUU National President, the Chairman, on behalf of the congress declared the commencement of ASUU,” he submitted.
Reacting to the development, the university authorities said, it is not illegally holding the disbursement of the allowance but explained that, “two different groups which are the ASUU and Congress of Academic Union of Nigeria University (COAUNU) are to be given the allowance and both of them are at loggerheads and refused to communicate with the school authority on the modality it will use to disburse the allowance to them.
“If the unions could agree between themselves on how the allowance could be disbursed to them, the university would do the needful. Delay in the disbursement of the allowance is not the fault of the university but that of the two unions.”
