NYSC: Serving members empower 150 students in entrepreneurial skills

NO fewer than 150 secondary school students in Anambra State are currently undergoing a 5-day skill acquisition training by some serving corps members in the state.

The students, drawn from secondary schools within the state are being trained in skills in creative writing and public speaking, baking, fashion designing, ICT, photography, cosmetology, make-up artistry, Chinese language, music, business plan, among others.

Speaking during the training, the coordinator of the programme, Japhet Ariyibi, said the exercise, which is part of their Community Development Service, was targeted at equipping the students with entrepreneurial skills so they can be self-reliant after graduation.

He said the exercise was a way of giving back to the community what they have learnt in course of their one-year service to their fatherland.

“Besides their academic achievements, the students need to acquire certain basic skills in their areas of interests early in life so they can depend less on their parents for their livelihood,” he said.

The NYSC State coordinator, Ebenezer Olawole, commended the students for demonstrating keen interests in acquiring various skills in addition to their academic pursuit.

Olawole, who was represented by the Assistant Director, Community Development Service (CDS), Ayanda Ayorinde, challenged other students who are yet to key into the programme to take advantage of the training, assuring of easy access to soft loans for those willing set up their businesses at the end of the training.

One of the participants, Ozoemena Chidozie, said the choice of cosmetics and hair-gear making which is female dominated, was informed by its lucrative nature especially when being practiced by men.
