NSCDC averts tanker explosion in Sokoto

A major disaster was narrowly avoided in the early hours of Tuesday when a fully loaded petrol tanker slid and overturned at the Dan Marna Filling Station in Gagi, located in the Sokoto South Local Government Area.

The tanker was carrying 45,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and began leaking fuel onto the road, creating a significant threat to lives and property.

Thanks to the quick response from operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, a potential catastrophic fire outbreak was averted.

The NSCDC personnel swiftly cordoned off the area, restricting movement and preventing unauthorized individuals from attempting to collect the highly flammable liquid.

At the scene, Sokoto State NSCDC Commandant UI Alfadarai, represented by his Deputy Commandant, DCC Florence Awosan, assured residents that all necessary measures were in place to manage the situation effectively.

“Our priority is the safety of lives and property. We have deployed adequate personnel to manage the situation and prevent any possible explosion,” she stated.

Fire and emergency response teams were also mobilized to the site, working alongside the NSCDC to neutralize potential hazards. By midday, the remaining fuel had been safely evacuated, and the felled tanker was removed from the scene. Officers remained on-site for surveillance to ensure safety.

Meanwhile, some residents of Gagi commended the NSCDC for their swift response, emphasizing the importance of proactive security measures in preventing disasters.

The command, however, urged the general public to remain vigilant and law-abiding, assuring continued commitment to public safety.
