The National Orientation Agency (NOA) announced on Thursday that it has commenced sensitization and awareness creation regarding the National Values Charter. This initiative aims to restore the ideals and values that Nigerians were traditionally known for.
During a media briefing at the agency’s office in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was represented by the National Director of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement, Mrs. Olubukola Olorunfemi, emphasized the significance of the charter.
Issa-Onilu noted that the National Values Charter is embedded in the ‘Nigerian Promise’ and the ‘Citizens Code.’ She explained that the Federal Executive Council had approved the mandatory inclusion of the charter in the curriculum for both basic and post-basic schools.
“The National Values Charter, which will soon be unveiled by the President, serves as a blueprint for promoting core values that will guide our actions and decisions,” she said. “Values are principles, beliefs, and ideologies that shape us as individuals.”
She highlighted the importance of the National Identity project in redirecting all Nigerians, regardless of class, ethnicity, or religion, toward the ideals and values that historically built our societies and institutions.
“This charter represents a mutual commitment between the country and its citizens. It requires the government at all levels to fulfill its basic non-negotiable promises in return for the commitments from the citizens,” she added.
The charter is anchored in the ‘Nigerian Promise’ and the ‘Citizens Code,’ which comprises a set of seven promises from the country to its citizens and seven obligations that citizens owe to their country.
Furthermore, the Federal Executive Council has mandated that the National Values Charter be included in the syllabuses of schools at both basic and post-basic levels, incorporating key value orientation topics. Additionally, it has been approved that the teaching of the National Values Charter will be a mandatory component of pre-resumption retreats for Federal Executive Council members, National Assembly members, the Judiciary, and other government appointees.
