NIS decry influx of non professionals in surveying

A member of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Mr Clement Nwabichie has appealed to the National Assembly to review the enabling Act of Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) so as to block loopholes in ensuring professionalism in surveying.

Nwabichie who made the appeal on Tuesday at the National Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MPCD) workshop, South-West Zone held at Nigerian Institution of Surveying (NIS), Ibadan, said such amendment will ensure that clear delineation of the roles of a surveyor.

The two-day workshop of NIS National headquarters with the theme, “Space Technology Application: Retracing Our Roots” saw various speakers argue that the implementation of the SURCON Act will take care of the challenges of lack of professionalism in the surveying community.

Nwabichie argued that the amendment of the SURCON Coordination Act will ensure mandatory compliance to stipulated professional practices in surveying.

He said that there was urgent need for the NIS to formulate strategic plan for the profession,

NIS President, Mr Akin Oyegbola explained that the workshop was to imbue surveyors with knowledge on modern day technologies, like the usage of drones in Geography Information System, among other international best practices in surveying.
