About nine persons have been feared killed in a road accident that occurred in Duma village, Edati Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday. Seven of the victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition.
The accident involving two trailers, a Sharon commercial vehicle and another commercial car occurred at about 10 am.
One of the trailers was said to have been loaded with planks and the other loaded with varieties of goods were heading for Minna, Niger State capital before the accident took place.
The Sharon vehicle which was conveying passengers – mainly traders – heading for the weekly market day in Kudu village was said to have rammed into one of the trailers and before it burst into flames immediately. The remaining vehicles were also said to have rammed into the burning vehicles.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the motor boy of the trailer carrying planks sustained serious injuries and was rushed to General Hospital in Kutigi.
The eyewitness also said the firefighters who responded to the incident ran out of water at some point.
When contacted, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mohammed Musa Ahmed, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident and promised to get back later in the day. He was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
It would be recalled that a similar incident occurred in Enagi, headquarters of Edati local government area last week where three people and shops were razed.
