The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to ensure that the welfare and well-being of all the internally displaced persons (IDP) as a result of banditry and flood disasters across the state is given the adequate attention it deserves.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, stated this in his office on Monday in Minna when the Director General of the agency, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, in conjunction with other management teams of the agency, paid him a courtesy call in his office.
The Speaker, who decried the activities of bandits in the state and the effect of this year’s flood disasters that have rendered thousands of people homeless, asked the agency not to leave any stone unturned in ensuring that all the Internally Displaced Persons in the state were given a sense of belonging.
Sarkindaji, however, noted that Niger State is among the states that were worst hit in terms of armed bandit activities and flood disasters, stressing that the current predicament was not their making and therefore deserved love, care, and attention.
An estimated 7,000 people, including men, women, and children, were said to have been taking refuge in internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps across seven local government areas of the state due to armed banditry activities and flood disasters.
The Speaker, who appealed to the Federal Government to come to the rescue of the state by providing some relief materials to these vulnerable ones, urged the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to ensure that the little the state government can provide gets to the targeted beneficiaries.
He assured the agency that the 10th assembly in the state will give it the necessary support needed to enable it to discharge this all-important responsibility to the people, saying that “our doors are open for you and the assembly is ready to give you all the supports to ensure that you succeed.
“We are the representatives of the people, and therefore their welfare is a priority to us. We feel concerned about the plights of the IDPs in the state, and we will give the agency the necessary legislative support, he declared.
Earlier, the Director General of the agency, Alhaji Baba Arah, informed the Speaker that he was in the state house of assembly with his management team to solicit the support of the legislatures towards achieving the agency’s overall goal of catering to and providing for those affected by one disaster or another in the state.
The NSEMA boss disclosed that there are internally displaced people across the seven local government areas of the state who urgently need relief materials, saying that the majority of these people are victims of banditry and flood disasters.
