NEDC to train 100,000 teachers on education revival in North-East

The North-East Development Commission has initiated a programme to train 100,000 teachers in a bid to revitalise the education sector in the North-East region, which has been severely impacted by over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

Khalifa Mahammed, Manager of Scholarship Training and Capacity Building Unit under the Humanitarian Directorate of the NEDC, disclosed this in Maiduguri on Tuesday during the opening of a two-day “training of trainers” workshop for consultants who will be responsible for training teachers in school management and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education across the six states of the North-East region.

He noted that the NEDC, in partnership with the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna will upgrade the qualifications of these teachers across the six states of the region, which include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba.

According to him, the training, which will cover six states in the North-East region, will start with 40,000 teachers in the first batch which is expected to be finished before end of 2025.

“Taking into consideration the dilapidation of the entire education structure in the North East due to Boko Haram insurgency, this training targets the upgrade and retraining of 100,000 teachers including education administrators in the region.

“The training of these teachers and education administrators will improve the quality of education in the region while the teachers can foster a peaceful, healthy, and well-educated society, ultimately leading to a thriving regional economic development,” he added.

Mr. Mahammed explained that NEDC State coordinators of each state will collaborate with state commissioners of education of each state in selecting suitable beneficiaries for the training.

The commission will take care of the participants’ accommodations, feeding, and transportation. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive stipends and certificates.

He said the programme is part of the NEDC’s efforts to address the developmental challenges facing the North-East region, including poverty, illiteracy, and ecological degradation.

The commission aims to lay a solid foundation for long-term stability and development in the region. This initiative is a crucial component of the broader North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP).
