The Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA), Owerri branch in Imo State, has set up a Bar Centre to collate the names of innocent people of Imo State who are unjustly arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police.
This is sequel to the meeting with the Commissioner of Police and the Security Adviser to the Governor held, on Thursday in Owerri.
The association, through a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Uzor Enwere, said that the Bar, through its Committee on Human Rights would anchor and coordinate the help desk at the Bar Center to entertain complaints on unlawful arrest and detention of Imolites.
Enwere said that complaints received would be taken up with the appropriate quarters in order to secure the release of the detainees; considering that the Courts are not sitting owing to the JUSUN strike.
According to him, the approach is dictated by the precarious security situation in Imo State at the moment which has the semblance of a war situation.
He said that the outcome of their interactions revealed that there was “more to the situation than meets the eyes.”
The Publicity Secretary said that the Human Rights help desk of the Bar would open from Saturday, 5th day of June 2021 at the Bar Centre from 10 am or so soon thereafter.
