My six-year-old son has been having frequent sore throat for the past few months. I have tried all types of drugs and antibiotics without any improvement. I will appreciate your kind assistance.

Sore throats are most often caused by a viral infection like the common cold. Antibiotics will not help a sore throat caused by a virus. These infections usually get better without medication in 7 to 10 days. However, since your son’s sore throat has not improved despite all the medications you have given him, then it will be necessary for your pediatrician to examine his throat to see if he has any other problems. A swab of the back of your child›s throat should also be taken to collect a test sample. The sample can then be tested for the kind of bacteria causing the problem as well as the appropriate medications.
