Alliyu Ayomide better known as Sultan is a rapper who says his songs will stand the test of time. The fast-rising act spoke to ROTIMI IGE about his craft and future plans.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Alliyu Ayomide Sultan is my name. I am from Ede, Osun State. I am a law graduate from the University of Ibadan. I am an entertainer, musician (instrumentalist) and a businessman .

I am an optimist, born on the third of May. I love to make people laugh and help the needy. I hate lies and arrogance. I admire wit and honesty. I am a lover of good food and very beautiful ladies. I respect people who chase their dreams to the end. The question I ask myself each time before any endeavour is (se o pay?) is it worth it? Then I push.

When did you discover rap?

I discovered rap at early stage. It was back in high school when some guys from Ghana came over to my school then (Nickdel College), that I discovered I could rap as well. They thrilled each class they went then and I admired their style. I wanted it and I made the first move by listening and buying CDs. I would listen to artistes that were doing really great then and would follow their style. I did that till I found my own sound and style. I broke through that phase of discovery, when I came out for the first time to do what I had always done in the bathroom in front of the whole class, the school loved it and I was encouraged even by the dreaded principal. I became very popular in school then. I loved it and kept on pursuing.

Your stage name Sultan, where did it come from?

The name Sultan, was given to me by my father (Mr Adegboyega Alliyu).  He is always a happy person. He loved music. He gave me the name. To him, it symbolises a king, someone very important.

I cherish the name. It’s what my people, friends and fans worldwide call me. Some would add style to the name e.g (sulte, sultyfire, kingsulty).

Inspiration

Basically, for me. I listen to a lot of artistes, around the world. Eminem, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Olamide, Reminisce, Mi and Lacrae, Dagrin, etc. They have their styles. I learn from them and pick only the relevant ones. I am very creative. I have a different way of seeing the world. I relate to my environment on a different level. It sharpens my music. I know and I am certain that I would stay evergreen. Because, music itself chose me.

Aren’t you scared of competition? Critics say rap music doesn’t sell…

I am not scared at all. Rap or no rap I would sell. Besides, I am an all rounder. I sing very well too. I produce. I have recorded many danceable and very good music. I don’t think I would be exhausted even after 20 years of putting out materials. I would make money from my music. My fan base is fast rising and the fand are willing to buy my music and sell out my concerts.

Tell us about your song.

My songs are totally out of this world. I would say I am blessed really. I have recorded a few, about 53 unreleased tracks already. They appeal to my environment, it could fit in every angle. From the street, even down to our place of worship, we are reaching all.

Your typical day

I am a very playful person. You either catch me making loads of people laugh wherever you find me or see me working at the studio. The studio is my favourite hangout spot though. Aside, I still visit the chambers regularly and also attend to my business. My fans can always reach me on Instagram @sultyfire.
