Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has put an end to the 10-year-old relationship between a woman, Aminat Olujide and her husband, Oluwaseyi Olujide.
Aminat, who brought a divorce suit against her husband stated that he was a liar and a brute. The plaintiff added that he was always threatening her with a cutlass any time they fought.
The plaintiff told the court she was fed up with their relationship and therefore pleaded for divorce.
However, Oluwaseyi refused to agree to claim giving the welfare of their children as his major reason.
After he had listened to the evidence of both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje, stated that more evidence would be needed.
Ruling, he adjourned the case till May 13, and asked both parties to come to court with their children and parents.
Aminat in her evidence alleged: ”My husband doesn’t place any worth or value on me. He, therefore, beats me like a goat at every given opportunity.
“There is no man in our compound who has not seen my nakedness because when my husband beats me, he will strip me naked.
“My body bears scars of the wounds I sustained from his beatings while I have spent a fortune nursing body ache.
“He cares less about my survival and that of our children, which is one of the reasons we fight. He always lies that his salary was not paid and sometimes threaten me with cutlass when I insist he must leave money for food.
“Since he’s irresponsible, I take up menial jobs to sustain the home and, more importantly, save our children from starving. I also clothe the whole family, train our children in school and on many occasions pay the rent from the stipends I collect from these jobs.
“My lord, my lot is worse than that of a widow. I can’t bear with my husband’s maltreatment any more. I pray the court to abort our union, “Aminat told the court.
“I’m not ready to divorce my wife,” Oluwaseyi stated before the court.
“My lord, she lied against me to gain this court’s favour.
“I pray the court not to separate us or grant her custody of our children because I don’t want our children to suffer.
“Our parents are already mediating in our differences and I believe the whole issue will be ironed out very soon,” he stated.
