Mother allegedly burns daughter with electric iron over N250 in Lagos

The victim

A 30-year-old mother, Ayo Sheriff, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly burning her 16-year-old daughter’s upper and lower right limbs with an electric iron over a minor misunderstanding.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, April 24.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the victim, Aishat Sheriff, a secondary school student, and also a part-time auxiliary nurse, was given the sum of N500 by her boss with an instruction to hand over N200 to someone on her way home, use N50 as transport fare and return the balance of N250 the following day.

However, on the day she was to return the money to her boss, the victim reportedly defaulted, claiming that the balance was with her mother.

This made the boss to call her mother on the phone, but the mother denied knowledge of any money, the Nigerian Tribune further gathered.

When the victim returned home from work, her mother, who was already waiting for her, plugged an electric iron and waited until it was hot before burning her daughter, while claiming that the girl was a disgrace to the family.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chike Oti, said the case of child abuse was reported to the police by the Chosen Child Orphanage Home, located at Gastya Estate, Ijora-Badia.

The PPRO stated further the Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohim Edgal, was miffed at the sight of the wounds inflicted on a child by her mother.

He, therefore, called on parents to correct their children with love, saying that the rate at which cases of domestic violence were increasing had become a source of concern to the command.

The Gender Section of the command, headed by SP Adejoke Cole, had concluded an investigation into the case, and would charge the suspect to the Ikeja Magistrates’ court today (Monday), SP Oti added.

Meanwhile, the victim and her siblings are being sheltered at the orphanage.
