The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), on Wednesday, disclosed plans to metre over 400,000 customers under phase1 of the National Mass Metering Programme.
It said for phase zero of the Programme, over 100,000 customers within the period.
Speaking with Tribune Online via the telephone, AEDC Spokesperson in Abuja, Mr Oyebode Fadipe, explained that both the NMMP and the Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) were still being ran concurrently.
“We have completed phase zero and we metered over 100,000 customers. We are preparing for phase 1 and we target over 400,000 for this phase.
“Phase 1 is a hybrid of the NMMP and MAPs. So customers have the option of either going through the NMMP or MAPs. Under MAPS they pay but under NMMP they don’t pay but eventually, everyone will get meter free and if they pay, they will still have their refund through electricity token,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had in August 2021, released a regulation on the workings of NMMP and MAPs.
It said the regulations were to provide regulatory guidelines for the provision of meters to customers of successor electricity distribution licensees while closing the metering gap through an accelerated roll-out of meters.
