PROF. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, says the newly opened 110-bed Maternal and Childcare Centre (MCC) in Eti-Osa Local Government area, will impact positively on the state’s maternal and child health indices.
Abayomi made the assertion during an inspection of the facility, saying that the centre would address the issue of access to maternal and child care services in Eti-Osa area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the centre commenced operation on Aug. 24.
The commissioner said that maternal and childcare services contribute significantly to the clients’ attendance at public healthcare facilities in the state.

He said that the centre would provide succour for residents of the area who travel far to other parts of the state to access quality maternal and childcare services.
“Over one million women of childbearing age and children will benefit from various maternal and childcare services to be provided by the centre built by the Lagos State Government,” the commissioner said.
Abayomi said the establishment of maternal and childcare centres in strategic locations across the state underscores, not only the government’s capacity to reduce infant and maternal mortality but also the determination to deliver quality healthcare services.
He said that the centre would provide health services including delivery, gynaecology, paediatric services, immunisation, among others.
Also, Dr Titilayo Goncalves, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, said that establishment of the facility in the community was a dream that comes true for residents of the area.
“I strongly believe that commencement of operation at this centre will help address the issue of maternal and child deaths in Eti-Osa Local Government area and its environs,” Goncalves said.
She urged parents to continue to support the state government’s drive to reduce maternal and infant mortality by patronising only the accredited health facilities.
The permanent secretary also advised them to participate in all child-survival interventions and programmes being implemented by the state government.
