THE Lagos State government has stressed the need for students, especially in secondary schools, to develop innate skills and talents that could make them become great inventors in the future.
Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, gave the advice at a forum tagged ‘Lagos Schools Invention Platform’ (Lagos SIP), Season 11, held recently.
She said the essence of the SIP initiative is to engage the minds of students to think of inventing economically useful things and engage in entrepreneurship activities for self-discovery and future economic independence.
The Lagos State government, she said, is determined to continue to place emphasis on invention and entertainment for youths, including students, to enable them discover their talents and make something great with them.
According to a statement by the assistant public affairs director of the ministry, Mr Kayode Sutton, the commissioner, who was represented at the event by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Abosede Adelaja, called on other stakeholders, including corporate bodies, to join hands with the state government in achieving the goals.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of Private Education and Special Programmes in the ministry, Mr. Adeyemi Adebayo, said SIP so far had proven to be effective as many of the past inventions of the students had earned the state laurels at national and international competitions.
