Policemen in Lagos State will undergo Taekwondo training to keep them fit for self-defense during attacks on them in the course of their duty.
This was disclosed on Monday by the state commissioner of police, Idowu Owohunwa during the decoration of newly- promoted police officers in the state
The promoted policemen were rewarded for distinguishing themselves during a recent game in Delta State, where they won laurels for the Lagos State Police Command.
The police boss said, ” The training of our men on taekwondo, will add value to the self-defense capacity of officers and men of the command, so in the coming days we would be engaging you towards the possibility of having training that will expose officers and men of the command through technicality you have perfected so that an average policeman will be exposed to taekwondo and apply it to self-defense which helps them in the line of their duty.”
The police boss added that ” Lagos is known for excellent. You have shown resilience, commitment and courage by winning the medals and bronze.
“This is the highest I will be decorating as the commissioner of police in Lagos State. Today we will be inducting 1400 (one thousand four hundred) policemen into the officer cadets of Nigeria police. ”
The Lagos police boss stresses that “It means a lot, there is a wide gap from being an Inspector to Assistant Superintendent of Police.
“At Lagos State Command I think we can leverage on the excellence with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the operation to discuss the possibility of enhancing our operational capacity.”
The police boss told the newly – promoted officers that “You all are now officers of the police. No more disserted police. The new rank comes with other obligations in terms of professional outlook, ability to dissect complex security issues and take decisions that will be aligned with the law and now there is no more excuse in your duty.
“The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has said it over again since he assumed office that promotion under his watch will now be based on merit and seniority.
“This set is the first that will benefit from the policy, I want you all to be proud that you earn it on merit.
“The IGP stands on professional ground and he wants us all to do the same. Excellence should be our watchword at all times.
“I appeal to you to see the promotion as another step in your career, I always believe certain values brought you here don’t want you to change the values and your character.”
